Reviews
Grading GMAT books?
Here I would like to compare the GMAT preparation books with each other based on various factors
Official GMAT Guides:Pros – A good pool of GMAT questions to practice. Gives a feel of real test questions.
Cons – No emphasis on how to tackle the questions and strategize for better time management. Explanations of illustrations are not good.
Overall, the every GMAT aspirant should grab a copy of this to be familiar with the type of questions that one can expect. Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; PS: This is just a question bank.
Kaplan:
Pros – Can be look up as practice book as well as a guide to clear fundamentals.
Cons – The mathematics section review are not up to the mark, as they just cover the basics and does not cover advanced topics very well. Also the strategies are also ambiguous, where you have to keep guessing the techniques with no real mathematical solutions. The quality of questions is also not good enough.
Princeton:
Pros – This book provides good insight on test taking techniques, and is a good source to have an understanding of making good guesses and solving questions with the process of elimination.
Cons – Here also you will not find good explanations in math section. It also lack the detailing on test strategies. The emphasis is found to be more on trial and error by guessing and not on solid mathematical methods.
Dummies:
Pros – This book provides good insight on application of test strategies and encompasses all the sections very well. This is a must have book for every GMAT aspirant.
Cons – One cannot solely rely on this book to have good score.
Barrons:
Pros – Very detailed illustrations in math section with a large pool of questions. The strategies followed are really good and easier to understand and follow. The book is laid out very well, and is another must have book for GATE aspirants.
Cons – The book does not touches deeper concepts. The section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions is largely ignored, which is one of the most important sections. A step by step approach to solve problems is not followed.
EZ Solutions (series of books):
Pros – The math review section is its USP. The strategies adopted are very realistic and efficient to solve problems. There are a lot of illustrations for better understanding f problem solving. The pool of questions is also enormous covering all the concepts. A good book for starters as well as most proficient test takers.
Cons – One have to buy the whole set to get the best out of this series of books, which comes at a relatively hefty price, but still its worth it. It is recommended for aspirants who have got good amount of time to learn, understand and practice.
Nothing fresh
I already have a copy of 11th edition, but still bought the new edition in hope of solving new practice questions, but most of the questions are repeated from the previous edition. Even the mock test is same. It is a good book, but don’t expect anything new in the 12th edition. Good for those who don’t have previous edition.
